Directed by the Austin-based Anne Lewis, the documentary A Strike and an Uprising (in Texas) recalls through oral history the 1938 San Antonio pecan shellers walkout led by Emma Tenayuca and the 1987 Jobs for Justice march on Nacogdoches by workers in responses to the Annie Mae Carpenter race and gender discrimination lawsuit against the Stephen F. Austin State University. The documentary compares and contrasts the labor revolts at two periods of time of unjust working conditions for women and minorities. A Strike and an Uprising (in Texas). will screen 2 p.m. May 5 at the AFS Cinema during the Cine Las Americans International Film Festival. Anne Lewis previously directed To Save the Land, Justice in the Coalfields, On Our Own Land, Chemical Valley, Fast Food Women, and Anne Braden: Southern Patriot. She is a senior lecturer with The University of Texas at Austin’s Radio-Television-Film department.
